Loano

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 11,563 · Postal code: 17025

At Loano the Doria minted their own coin. The fief was theirs from 1505, and Giovanni Andrea Doria set out to make it an imperial city: he rebuilt the hospital, the printing house, the pawn bank, the aqueduct and the mint, and put up the palazzo and the church of Sant'Agostino.

The lordship lasted 232 years, until 1737. Older still is the oratory of San Giovanni Battista, from 1262, among the oldest in Italy, which keeps a portion of the Baptist's ashes. In 1795 the three-day battle of Loano was fought here, and won by the French. There are 11,563 residents.
