In 1153 the bishop of Albenga charged Anselmo dei Quaranta with collecting the tithes in a score of villages, Garlenda among them. The curious part is that people took to him: in a short time the tax collector had become their feudal lord, and his family took the name Della Lengueglia.
Then the fief turned into a tangle. In the autumn of 1543 Garlenda rebelled against its lords, and when the last of them died without heirs it took years of lawsuits, a small army and ten thousand gold florins paid to the imperial court to establish, in 1599, whose the village was. The population is 1,214.
