Stellanello

Province: Savona · Region: Liguria · Population: 858 · Postal code: 17020

The name, the legend says, comes from Stefanello: the Saracen prince Al Kadir carried off the beautiful Andalora and tied her to his ship's mast; her betrothed reached her by night at Capo Mele, was discovered and killed, and she threw herself into the sea rather than stay in the corsairs' hands. From those two young people come the names of Andora and Stellanello.

On 19 June 1944 the parish priest of San Lorenzo, don Pietro Enrico, was arrested by the Nazi-fascists at the end of Mass: he offered his own life in exchange for the release of the other prisoners taken with him, and was machine-gunned at the Molino del Fico. The population is 858.
