Adrara San Martino

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,161 · Postal code: 24060

Adrara was a single village, and it split over a question of churches. The people up the hill belonged to the parish of San Rocco, those down the valley to that of San Martino, and in 1668 the territory was divided into two comuni. But sharing out the land took almost a century: the final signature is from 1754, and it lays down that four ninths of the territory go to San Rocco and the remaining five to San Martino. They have been two separate villages ever since, and they still are.

Before falling out with each other, the people of Adrara had fallen out with everyone else: in the Middle Ages this small valley was the refuge of those fleeing the wars between Guelphs and Ghibellines, then the war arrived here too and a castle had to be built. The Guelph Giovanni Fermo degli Alessandrini won repeatedly against the Ghibellines of Villongo and the Val Cavallina. Of the castle only the foundations are left on the Ducone hill, but it ended up on the municipal coat of arms, granted only in 2021.
