Viadanica

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,084 · Postal code: 24060

Viadanica has no historic centre: it is made of hamlets scattered over the hill, and the reason lies in the way it filled up. When the Bergamo country split between Guelphs and Ghibellines, into this small valley of the Guerna stream came groups of people in flight, looking for somewhere isolated and quiet. The quiet did not last long: towers and fortifications soon had to be built to protect the inhabitants and the local trade, and two of those towers still stand higher up, towards Lerano and Giogo. They are the same two the municipality has put on its coat of arms.

The parish church, of the sixteenth century, holds an altarpiece by Palma il Giovane with the Presentation of Jesus and two wooden statues by Andrea Fantoni. But the oldest piece stands outside the boundaries: the Romanesque church of Sant'Alessandro, at Canzanica, belongs to the parish of Viadanica but stands on the territory of Adrara San Martino. It was built in the ninth century, and parts of the walls survive from then; the Romanesque apse and the bell tower came later, along with the fourteenth- and fifteenth-century frescoes inside. Recently restored, it is a national monument.
