Berzo San Fermo

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,298 · Postal code: 24060

For nearly half a century Berzo San Fermo did not exist: at the beginning of the twentieth century it was merged with Borgo di Terzo, Grone and Vigano San Martino into a single municipality called Borgounito, and only in 1948 did the four villages each take their own name back. The first document naming Berzo, however, is far older: the testament of Taido, of the year 774.

The parish church is dedicated to saints Fermo and Rustico, and tradition holds that it stands where their bodies rested on their journey. It also tells that the emperor Maximilian, passing through, stopped to ask the two saints to cure his horses of an epidemic: and the horses were cured. Inside hang canvases by Gian Paolo Cavagna and Gianbettino Cignaroli.
