Saints Peter and Paul, patrons of the Romanesque Bridge

Bolgare celebrates Saints Peter and Paul on 29 June.
Bolgare lies along the Cherio, in the Bassa Bergamasca, and its name seems to go back to 452, when the Huns came through with Bulgar troops in their following who stayed long in the area: from Bulgare, where the Bulgars stay, the name would derive. From Roman times survive a mosaic in a house floor, funerary stones and imperial coins. The first document to name it is from 830, a bequest to the church listing lands at Bolgare.
On the central square stand the Guelph tower, what is left of the Berlendis castle, and the parish church of San Pietro: there were two towers, but in 1706 one came down, with part of the castle, to make room for the church. Guelph, the village had been razed in the thirteenth century by the Milanese and again in 1378 by the Ghibellines. The arms are of colours alone, red, gold and black; they turn up in an anonymous codex of 1596 in Bergamo's Biblioteca Civica as Bolgher, though whether as the town's or the da Bolgare family's is not clear.
