Telgate

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,857 · Postal code: 24060

Telgate appears in one of the oldest travel diaries in Europe. On the via Gallica, which linked Grado to Augusta Taurinorum, the village was a mutatio, that is a station where travellers changed horses, and as Mutatio Tellegate it is named in the Itinerarium Burdigalense, the account an anonymous pilgrim wrote of his journey from Bordeaux to Jerusalem between 333 and 334.

In the village there was a castle with seven towers: two remain today, and one of them has become the bell tower of the parish church. The churches of Telgate have also seen the end of a war, or rather two attempts at it: in 1156, after the bloody battle of the Grumore, the men of Bergamo and of Brescia signed a truce here in the church of San Michele, of which nothing now remains; but it was not enough, and a second treaty was needed, signed in the church of San Pietro in 1198, before calm truly returned.
