Chiuduno

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,852 · Postal code: 24060

The name of Chiuduno comes from Gaulish times: Claudun, whose suffix –dun marked for the Celts a place near hills or mountains. The Romans made it Claudunum, and the village grew along the road from Bergamo to Brescia, below the Valcalepio hills. On the Via Francesca, by the oratory of Santi Cosma e Damiano, a milestone turned up, among the most important Roman inscriptions in the province. The name appears in documents only from 795, and a deed of 928 recalls a votive chapel to San Vito, now vanished.

On the hill above stood a fortress, episcopal at first, held by the Suardi from the fourteenth century; legends grew about how impregnable it was, and a tower and stretches of wall survive. That castle is also the town's coat of arms, never formally granted, under the chief of the Empire that declares its Ghibelline allegiance. Chiuduno gave three men to Garibaldi's Thousand in 1860, among them Giuseppe Tironi, the expedition's official trumpeter. Button factories and the Valcalepio vines came in the twentieth century.
