On the coat of arms of Gorlago there is a tower, and it is drawn on purpose without battlements and half ruined: it is there to say that the village changed masters many times, passing back and forth between Guelphs and Ghibellines. Beside it stand an armoured arm with a sword, for the wars, and a paved road, for the Roman origins. The wars were real: Ghibelline and tied to the Suardi, the village was attacked by the Guelphs in 1393 and again in 1398, when the whole settlement was burnt.

It was at Gorlago, in 1098, that the bishop-count of Bergamo was deposed, and in the vacuum of power that followed the city gave itself a commune; among the first Bergamo consuls there were several men from here. One of the village's villas, the Villa della Torre, they used to call "the inferno": inside it was a Last Judgement frescoed by Giovan Battista Moroni, who died before finishing it and left it to his sons to complete. Today that work is in the apse of the parish church.
