Fuipiano Valle Imagna

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 221 · Postal code: 24030

The name of Fuipiano is a small file of parchments: in 1117 the place is foido plano, in 1216 foeto plano, and in 1547, when the surveyors of the Imagna valley came to measure the land, they recorded it as contrada de foy plan. Hence the two possible readings, the beech plateau or the pool of water, which is also plentiful up here. The village really was born in the Middle Ages, and born as a refuge: those who had to escape the vendettas between Guelphs and Ghibellines climbed to the head of the valley, where nobody came looking for them.

For centuries the border between two states ran through the municipality: Venice held only part of the territory, including the hamlet of Arnosto, and the rest belonged to the Duchy of Milan. Tradition has it that the customs post of the Serenissima stood at Arnosto; the coat of arms, granted in 2009, recalls it with two pillars of Hercules and the book of Saint Mark, while admitting that there is no historical evidence. In November 1976 a landslide wiped out the hamlet of Pagafone completely, in the lower part of the territory.
