Cornalba

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 301 · Postal code: 24017

The name comes from Latin: the white rock, that is, the wall that stands above the village. The via Mercatorum passed through here, holding together the val Seriana and the upper val Brembana; when the via Priula was opened the traffic went elsewhere, and Cornalba was left with its fields and its animals.

On the twenty-fifth of November 1944 a fascist company came up the val Serina: the machine guns were set in a meadow and on the bell tower, and in the round-up fifteen partisans of the Giustizia e Libertà brigade were killed, among them the Cornetti brothers, who were from here. The town's coat of arms is that of an extinct family, the Cavagnis, with two crossed swords added behind the dove to remember that day.
