Feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Dossena, a municipality of 962 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patron, the nativity of Saint John the Baptist.
Dossena has 962 inhabitants astride the Val Serina and the Val Brembana, and its name comes from the Latin dorsum, the ridge on which it sits. The iron, calamine and galena mines of Monte Vaccareggio made it the first stable settlement of the valley: Pliny the Elder speaks of it too, and in Roman times there was a vicus here, the main centre of the whole valley. The first written document naming the village is from 920 and mentions a monk.
Dossena lived off the via Mercatorum, until the Venetian podestà Alvise Priuli had the via Priula built through the lower valley: the new road cut the village out. Hunger began, and emigration to Venice. During a famine the people of Dossena were offered a great quantity of wheat in exchange for the paintings in the parish church — among them works by Paolo Veronese, sent home by the emigrants themselves: they refused, and an epigraph still records it. In 2022 the Ponte del Sole was strung above the village, five hundred and five metres of Tibetan bridge.
