Feast of Saint Mary of the Annunciation
📅 Every year, on 25 March
On 25 March Serina, a municipality of 2,165 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patroness Saint Mary of the Annunciation, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
There is a mermaid on the arms of Serina, and the mermaid is a misunderstanding. The village inherited it from the Carrara, the local noble family, who had adopted it for the assonance with the name; but Serina does not come from that, it comes from the same root as the river Serio and means flow, current — the stream that runs down the upper valley. The three stars around it are the three families that counted: Carrara, Tiraboschi and della Valle. The coat of arms was taken from the frontispiece of the statute of the Upper Val Brembana of 1468.
Serina was the capital of that valley, with a vicar of the Venetian Republic of its own, until 1797, because the via Mercatorum passed through here, the merchants' road between the val Seriana and the upper val Brembana. At the time of the Risorgimento the village had almost fifteen hundred inhabitants, twice as many as nearby San Pellegrino: today the ratio is the other way round. Here, in 1480, Jacopo Negretti was born, the painter everyone calls Palma il Vecchio.
