San Pellegrino Terme

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,950 · Postal code: 24016

The Grand Hotel of San Pellegrino was built in twenty months and opened in the summer of 1904: seven storeys in Art Nouveau style, with the wooden domes on top that look like airships, and inside everything one could then wish for — lifts, electric light, drinking water and a telephone in each of the two hundred and fifty rooms. Two years earlier work had begun on the Municipal Casino, which as a gambling house did not last long: the tables closed in 1917.

What brought all this to the bottom of a mountain valley is the water. The sulphate-alkaline springs, known since the Middle Ages, rise at a constant temperature of twenty-six degrees, and the spa grew up around them; the mineral water that bears the village's name has been bottled here since the twentieth century. The name itself comes from Saint Peregrine, bishop of Auxerre and martyr, and goes back to the time when the bishops in Charlemagne's service were founding parishes throughout the empire.
