Fiorano al Serio

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,071 · Postal code: 24020

Fiorano al Serio measures one hundred and eight hectares, little more than a square kilometre: it is the smallest municipality in Lombardy, which has more than one thousand five hundred of them, and the third smallest in Italy. Into that space fit three thousand and seventy-one inhabitants and three alluvial terraces, one above the other, which are the staircase carved by the river Serio: at the top the plateau of San Fermo, cut about two million years ago; in the middle the plain where the old centre formed; at the bottom the terrace called, precisely, Prato Nuovo, where the industrial zone now stands.

From the southern end of the village starts the road that crosses a medieval bridge of the twelfth century, spans the Serio, enters the territory of Casnigo and leads into the Val Gandino. The valley floor, however, no longer has visible boundaries: the building of the second half of the twentieth century has welded Fiorano to the neighbouring villages in what is by now called a long city, running from Bergamo as far as Colzate. The name is said to come from the Latin Florianum, from Florius, one of the first owners of these lands.
