Vertova

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,844 · Postal code: 24029

At Vertova, Lombard law remained in use until 1491. Not as written law, but as custom: the Lombards had arrived in the sixth century and their rules had taken such deep root that people went on governing themselves by them for centuries, until they were formally abolished. From the village came a bishop of Bergamo too, Alcherio of the Alcheri family, who held the see from 1013 to 1022.

The name is still argued over. Some trace it to a pre-Latin root, some to a temple of the god Vertumnus that the Romans are said to have built in the upper part of the valley floor, and others again, like Dante Olivieri, to a word meaning open land, common land. The village lies where the Vertova stream enters the Serio, and going up its valley the houses thin out until they disappear: only the little hamlet of Cavlera remains, on top of the mountain of the same name, made up almost entirely of second homes.
