Saint Hippolytus, patron of Gazzaniga
📅 Every year, on 13 August
Gazzaniga celebrates Saint Hippolytus, Roman martyr, on 13 August, in the church dedicated to him.
The name of Gazzaniga comes from the late Latin gagium, which meant a large fenced woodland: from there Gagianum and then Gagianiga, the form in which the village appears in the first written documents, around 830, and which is still the name in dialect. The first settlement was made by the Lombards, who planted a fara here, and the village grew around that court, on ground raised above the valley floor of the Serio.
The old centre has kept its medieval layout: houses of large stones and river cobbles, with the loggias that served for farm work, the walls with their gateways and, at the eastern end, the council square, where the town house and the butcher's stood. In the little valley of the Rovaro, instead, opens the Corna Altezza cave, where burials from the Copper Age have been found along with the bones of foxes, marmots and cave bears.
