Feast of Saint Victor the Martyr
📅 Every year, on 8 May
On 8 May Gaverina Terme, a municipality of 871 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patron Saint Victor the Martyr, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Gaverina Terme has 871 inhabitants in a side valley on the right of the Val Cavallina. The town's coat of arms tells you almost everything: the blue field is the lake of Endine, the four stars are the four hamlets, Fonti, Trate, Gaverina and Piano, and the red fountain has four jets, one for each of the four thermal springs that rise here, the Centrale, the Bassa, the Molognetta and the Ippocastano. It is they that gave the village the second half of its name, and the spa building, put up at Fonti in 1922, is full liberty style.
Before the water there were the factions. In the Middle Ages the two halves of what is now a single comune stood on opposite sides: up at Gaverina lived the Giovannelli, Ghibellines; further down at Piano were the Suardi, who held much of the Val Cavallina. They fortified accordingly, and the Suardi tower, of the fourteenth century, still dominates the whole area, while the church of San Rocco was built on the rock spur where the Giovannelli had their stronghold. Venice put an end to it in the fifteenth century, and later it was the Venetians who reunited the two comuni into one. On the Colle Gallo, finally, there is a sanctuary of 1690 born from a pilgrim's vision: since its restoration it has become the meeting point of the local cyclists, and the Madonna del Colle Gallo has been made their patron.
