Vigano San Martino

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,252 · Postal code: 24060

The parish church of Vigano San Martino, built in 1535, did not bother with a bell tower: it took a corner of the castle standing next to it and used it as it was. Of the rest of the stronghold only ruins remain, absorbed into the houses, and the tower has ended up on the town's coat of arms along with a prehistoric axe.

The axe belongs there: in the cave known as the Buco del Corno very ancient human remains have come to light, along with the bones of hyenas, bears, deer and wolves. At the beginning of the twentieth century the village was merged with Borgo di Terzo, Berzo San Fermo and Grone into a single municipality, Borgounito, and stayed there until 1948, when the four took back their own names.
