Feast of Santa Maria
📅 Every year, on 8 September
On 8 September Grone, a municipality of 913 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patroness Santa Maria.
Grone has 913 inhabitants in the Val Cavallina, on the left bank of the Cherio, and its territory climbs from the river up to the hills of San Fermo. From the Middle Ages, when the Suardi were in command here, three towers remain, which are also on the coat of arms; and in 1928, digging to rebuild the parish church, the remains of a fortified building came to light, probably a castle about which nothing more was known. Inside the church there are paintings by Cavagna and carved woodwork.
On the edge of the village the mill of the Acqua Sparsa is still working: it is the last mill in the whole valley, it has a wooden structure of 1930 and it grinds by putting together the force of the water and the electric one. There was also a period when Grone did not exist: from 1928 to 1947 it was merged with the neighbouring Borgo di Terzo, Berzo San Fermo and Vigano San Martino into a single comune called Borgounito, dissolved later under the Republic.
