Brusaporto

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,393 · Postal code: 24060

About the name of Brusaporto there is no historical certainty, only a legend handed down by word of mouth: that in the thirteenth century the little lord of the Rocca worked his peasants to exhaustion, that one night they rose up, set fire to the Rocca and dragged him to the stake in the square, shouting at him brüsa porco, "burn, pig". Something in the documents does fit, though: in the statutes of Bergamo of 1333 the village is divided into two communities, called Amberethe and Brusaporcho.

Of the castle on the Tomenone hill, which belonged to the Rivola and was never a residence but only a stronghold, the ring of walls remains: in 1380 the Ghibellines destroyed it. Against the western wall of what is left, on 6 March 1956, a Mustang of the Italian air force crashed, and the pilot, the twenty-two-year-old sergeant Mario Locatelli, was killed. In that same year the village became independent again: in 1927 it had been merged with Bagnatica into a comune called Rocca del Colle, and the rivalry between the two made them split once more.
