Saint Stephen, patron of Mozzanica

In the village they call them roze, and there are many: irrigation ditches, canals, and a moat that still surrounds the old centre, fed by a channel drawn in turn from the fosso bergamasco. Because of all this water Mozzanica has earned the nickname of the Venice of the lower Bergamo plain. The name, for that matter, says the same thing: it comes from the Celtic Mosanga, which means a marshy place, or one surrounded by marshes.
In 1018 a Milanese priest gave the bishop of Cremona the property he held here, and with that act Mozzanica passed from the orbit of Milan into that of Cremona: ever since, though it lies in the Bergamo province, its history has stayed tied to the Cremona country. In 1189 the bishop granted it administrative autonomy and the village became a free commune, but the freedom lasted little more than half a century. On the border with the Republic of Venice, in 1492, Ludovico Sforza had a tower built forty-two metres high, and it is still there.
