Saint Martin and the Palio Sergnanese
📅 Every year, on 11 November; the Palio Sergnanese and the Festa del Binengo
Sergnano celebrates Saint Martin on 11 November, with the Sagra di San Martino, in the church dedicated to him.
The village still carries the name of its first owner. Sergnano — anciently Serenianum — was born from the farm that in the first century, with the centuriation, was assigned to a Roman colonist called Serenius: one plot of land among the many handed out on the plain in those years, which has nonetheless lasted two thousand years wearing the name of the man who received it. Of that man nothing else is known, and probably there was nothing else to know: he was someone who farmed.
Three thousand six hundred and thirty-one inhabitants in the province of Cremona. From 1454, with the peace of Lodi, Sergnano entered the territory of Crema under Venetian sovereignty. In the Napoleonic period the municipalities of Casale, Pianengo and Trezzolasco were attached to it, all of them independent again under the Lombardo-Veneto kingdom; only Trezzolasco was joined once more, this time for good, in 1868. South of the village, isolated in the middle of the fields, stands the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Binengo, around which its feast is held every year between the end of August and the beginning of September.
