Saint John the Baptist, patron of the land of Monte Gussa
📅 Every year, on 24 June
Mozzo celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, in the church dedicated to him.
Mozzo sits at the foot of the Bergamo hills: three rises, Monte Gussa, Colle dei Gobbi and Colle Lochis, cross it from north to south and keep a strip inside the Parco dei Colli. The earliest charters naming it are land bequests of 958 and 989 by Guglielmo and Auberto, sons of the Aponi da Muzo from whom the family, and then the village, took its name. From Fondum Musii, or Mucii, the name went through Muz, Muzo, Moss and Moz before settling as Mozzo.
The quartered arms hold the rest: the eagle of the Captains of Mozzo, the medieval castle above the three hills, the crosier of Bergamo's bishops and two crossed Roman daggers. In the twelfth century the poet Mosè del Brolo described chestnut woods, meadows always green and fertile fields, and a wood so full of game it was taken with nets and dogs. Between 1927 and 1947 Mozzo and Curno were merged into one comune, Curdomo, from the initials of Curno, Dorotina and Mozzo; at the Dorotina, in a country villa, Gaetano Donizetti spent his holidays.
