Curno

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 7,635 · Postal code: 24035

The first document to write the name of Curno dates from 857 and concerns an investiture: Garibaldo, bishop of Bergamo, received the place in fief, and the grant was restated in deeds of the following century. The name is thought to come from the Latin cornus, the cornel that grew thickly here, though some trace it further back, to the Ligurians. The arms keep both memories: a cornel branch with three berries beside a gold amphora and a silver sesterce from a Roman necropolis, and two red towers for the medieval strongholds.

Between 1927 and 1947 Curno ceased to exist: it had been joined to Mozzo in a single commune called Curdomo, whose name took the first letters of Curno, Dorotina and Mozzo. Then the two villages parted again. What remains is the Cà Dorotina, with its arcaded loggia, where Gaetano Donizetti came for a little quiet; and the roggia Curna, the irrigation channel dug at the order of Bartolomeo Colleoni to water the fields and settle the quarrels of the landowners.
