Pedrengo

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,799 · Postal code: 24066

Pedrengo lies on the left bank of the Serio, a few kilometres from Bergamo. The first documents naming it are from 1051, but a Roman military road already linked it to Gorle, crossing the river at the Ponte Maurizio, in Scanzorosciate. In the Middle Ages it was caught between Guelphs and Ghibellines; the peace of Cremona of 1440 and Venetian rule brought quiet and irrigation works, including the Borgogna and Pedrenga canals, still running. The channel then called Pedrenga was bought in 1473 by the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, who enlarged it and renamed it Borgogna after his military campaigns.

The coat of arms tells the village: three bees for the industry of its people, a silver wavy band with six blue waves for the Serio, the western boundary, and below the little church of the dead, the sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, raised outside the village for the plague dead of the seventeenth century. Pedrengo is also a place of villas: the Sottocasa one, by the architect Nicolino Calepio, and Villa Frizzoni, now the municipal library, whose park holds the four Himalayan cedars called the Giants of Pedrengo.
