Torre de' Roveri

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,310 · Postal code: 24060

Torre de' Roveri became a municipality thanks to a parish. In 1669 the bishop of Bergamo decided to establish one in the old church of San Girolamo, and with that act the village in effect detached itself from the territory of Pedrengo. Before that it had been a land of clashes between Guelphs and Ghibellines, ended by the peace of Cremona of 1440; then came Venice, which brought water to the fields by digging canals, first among them the Borgogna watercourse. On the hills above the village the Pasta left their name — the hill is still called the Colle dei Pasta — and after them the Sforza della Torre, who had the parish church built.

The coat of arms, granted in 1989, holds together the three things the village lives on or has lived on: a bunch of grapes for the vine, a twelve-toothed cogwheel for the De' Roveri cotton mill, and the bell tower, which is a battlemented tower and can be seen from far off. The present church, of the early twentieth century, is built on the remains of the previous one and has two- and three-light windows imitating the Lombard Gothic of the fifteenth century. Wine is still spoken of here: the red and white Valcalepio are made, and the moscato passito of Torre de' Roveri, from the grapes of the native Moscato di Scanzo vine.
