Saint Stephen, patron of Villa di Serio
📅 Every year, on 26 April
Villa di Serio celebrates Saint Stephen on 26 April, in the church dedicated to him. The town also venerates Our Lady of Good Counsel, in the shrine of the same name.
Villa di Serio sits at the mouth of the Val Seriana, on the left bank of the Serio, under the Bastia and Roccolo ridge dividing it from Scanzorosciate. The name first appears in 857, in a land exchange between the bishopric of Bergamo and the church of San Pietro in Scanzo: it reads Villa Ripae Serii, the village on the banks of the Serio, and the name held until the fifteenth century. Between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries it broke free of the bishop and ran itself by its own statutes, under a consul elected by the heads of household.
The coat of arms holds all of that: the cross of Sant'Andrea for the Bergamo district it belonged to, S.P.Q.R. for the Roman origin tradition gives it, the lion of St Mark for the Venetian centuries, and five stones per flank. They stand both for the martyrdom of St Stephen, the patron stoned to death, and for the quarry on Monte Bastia, on the Scanzo boundary, which the town statute calls the quarry of the first Italian cement: the marl fired there by Giuseppe Piccinelli in 1864 gave Italy its first artificial cement, and Italcementi grew from that venture.
