Feast of Saints Cornelius and Cyprian
📅 Every year, on 16 September
On 16 September Albano Sant'Alessandro celebrates Saints Cornelius and Cyprian; the town's main church bears the same title.
Albano Sant'Alessandro sits at the foot of the San Giorgio hill, on the road from Bergamo towards the Val Cavallina, crossed by the Zerra stream. The name goes back to an ancient Albanium, the holdings of the Roman family of the Albii. The village appears in writing around the year one thousand, and other Roman things remain: along the via Francesca, near the oratory of Santi Cosma e Damiano, a milestone was found that counts among the most important Roman inscriptions of the Bergamo area.
In the Middle Ages its people were Guelphs, and the Ghibellines sacked and burned the district more than once; under Venice things quietened and the Borgogna irrigation channel was dug. The full name arrived in 1863 by royal decree, and with it Saint Alexander on the coat of arms, in the armour of a Roman soldier, beside a six-pointed star for the six hamlets. The sanctuary of the Madonna delle Rose recalls an apparition to two travellers said to have taken place in 1417.
