Feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
📅 Every year, on 24 June
On 24 June Predore, a municipality of 1,859 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patron, the nativity of Saint John the Baptist.
The symbol of Predore is half a tower. On the shore of lake Iseo, inside a villa, stands the Half Tower of the twelfth century, what is left of the village's fortification. Legend says there were two brothers, one Guelph and one Ghibelline, and that one wanted to leave it standing while the other wanted to pull it down; in truth nobody knows what brought the keep down. It is on the municipal coat of arms all the same, together with a bow and arrow, for the etymology that derives Predore from preda, the spoils of the hunt.
The Romans came here on holiday. Digging the foundations of the new town hall, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the bases of bathing pools were found; and before that there had been the remains of a Roman road and of a port. The white stone Diana, ninety centimetres high, the village gave away in 1743, when it presented her to the city of Bergamo. Higher up, in the Bus del Coren cave, Neolithic finds came to light: the only evidence of cave settlement of that period in the whole Bergamo territory. And the sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve is reached by 288 steps.
