Feast of the Madonna di Cortinica
📅 Every year, on 2 July
On 2 July Tavernola Bergamasca, a municipality of 2,140 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patroness the Madonna di Cortinica, at the sanctuary on the hill.
The name comes from tabernula, the little inn: the boats that sailed lake Iseo had to put in when a squall got up, and the village grew around the shelters for travellers. The Roman roads, in fact, did not run along the shore but higher up, on the flank of the hill. Until the eighteenth century Tavernola could be reached only by water: the road to the mainland was built between 1832 and 1848.
The lake, though, took a piece of the village back. On the morning of 3 March 1906, after a night of noises and of water boiling up, the loggia of a villa on the shore collapsed; the next day a large villa, a medieval tower, a silk mill, houses, little squares and vegetable gardens sank into the lake. There was a single victim, Pietro Zenni, who had refused to leave his house. The same thing had happened at Castro in 1888 and would happen at Lovere in 1909; here it came back, on a smaller scale, in 1993.
