In the Valle del Freddo edelweiss grows at 360 metres above sea level. The reason is geological: from certain holes in the ground freezing air comes out in summer and warm air in winter, and along those 600 metres of little valley the flora is that of high altitude, as though the mountain had come down here. The biotope is strictly protected — one goes in only with guides — because very little would be enough to break it for good.

The village, on the plateau between Lake Iseo and the Val Cavallina, is medieval and looks it. Around the eleventh century three families — the Codoferri, the Oldrati and the Colombini — came to settle up here and built a fortified system: a castle, a tower and a tower-house, from which the movements of troops and caravans heading for the lake or the valleys could be watched. Then the Foresti arrived, and in 1330 the emperor Louis the Bavarian created the county of Solto, making one Maffeo Foresti a count palatine. The tower that still bears their name was once taller: it was cut down under Venice, when everything that might serve in war was being dismantled.
