Feast of Saints Faustinus and Jovita
📅 Every year, on 15 February
On 15 February Fonteno, a municipality of 685 inhabitants in the province of Bergamo, celebrates its patrons Saints Faustinus and Jovita, to whom the parish church is dedicated.
The village's name is a fountain. The first settlement is documented in 1338 around the fontana del coren, and that very fountain still stands in the municipal arms, together with two gold stars for Fonteno and the hamlet of Xino and the blue of Lake Iseo, which can be seen from up here. The municipality climbs from three hundred and seventy-five metres to one thousand three hundred and sixty-one, and in the valley more than three hundred farmsteads are counted, protected by a special planning scheme.
Under this valley, however, there is far more than meets the eye. In 2006 the vast cave system known as Bueno Fonteno was discovered: more than thirty-two kilometres of it have been explored so far, down to a depth of nearly five hundred metres. On the surface, instead, on the twenty-second of August 1944 the village was the scene of a hard fight between nazi-fascist forces and the partisans of the fifty-third Garibaldi Brigade, remembered as the battle of Fonteno. In the parish church there is an organ of a thousand pipes, built in 1885 and recently restored.
