Sorisole

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 9,097 · Postal code: 24010

Where the name Sorisole comes from is unknown: Siliceolae, a place beside a paved road, has been suggested, as have the personal name Surridius and a super insulam marking the land north of the Isola Bergamasca; all remain guesses. The arms prefer another reading, that of the rising sun: three hills over a field, a towered castle on the middle one and the sun blazing behind, because from the village the sun comes up right behind the range that closes the territory. The oldest document naming the place is from 747, when the Lombard king Ratchis gave the priest Limenone land of the fundus of Sorisole.

Guelph and therefore Venetian, the community was held as a separate land, free of tolls, and its men, with those of Azzonica, formed the compagnia dei Bastazi, which unloaded ships in the port of Venice until the Republic fell. In 1479 Pope Sixtus IV granted the juspatronatus, the right to choose their own parish priest: the heads of households gave it up by a vote only in 1949. On 26 September 1944, at Petosino, militiamen of the Italian Social Republic killed eight partisans, five in the fields around the village and three outside the nursery school; a ninth victim was shot the next day.
