Torre de' Busi is a comune that has changed province twice in twenty-five years. It had always belonged to Bergamo, but on 16 April 1992, when the province of Lecco was created, it ended up inside it; on 27 January 2018 it went back to Bergamo. It lies in the Valle San Martino, on the Sonna stream, and it is a scattered comune: none of its clusters serves as the head village for the others.
The name has changed too. The village used to be called Bretta, because it was a fief of the Capitani della Bretta; then it took its name from the tower of the Busi, the family present here since at least 1287, which held important ecclesiastical and administrative offices. The municipal coat of arms is theirs, with the lions of the Venetian Republic, which had supported the house as a reward for its services; of the tower only a few remains are left. In the fourteenth century the village was known for its mills, driven by the Sonna and the Bratta, and under Venice people took up working silk.
