Calolziocorte

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 14,009 · Postal code: 23801

The name is a sum: in 1927 Calolzio and Corte were merged into one comune, and the year after it reached its present shape by absorbing Rossino and Lorentino. Corte is the older half: it turns up in a Bergamo parchment of 774, where one Rado de Curte stands as a witness, the earliest inhabitant of Calolziocorte with written proof behind him.

The town sits in the Valle San Martino on the bank of the Adda, and until 1992 it belonged to the province of Bergamo; it then passed to the new province of Lecco, though the dialect spoken here is still the Bergamo one. The arms agree: on one side the facing roosters of the Benaglio, on the other the castle of Rossino, theirs before it went to the Rota.
