Valtorta

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 292 · Postal code: 24010

Valtorta means winding valley, and for centuries its wealth was underground: iron and silver were dug here, and the iron — which came also from the Val di Scalve and the Seriana — was beaten into nails by hammers driven by the streams. It was the mines that put this little valley within the ambitions of the Torriani first and the Visconti after; the cogwheel in the coat of arms recalls them.

From here came Girolamo Regazzoni, who emigrated to Venice and became bishop of Bergamo, nuncio in Paris and a participant in the Council of Trent. In 1888 an avalanche killed thirty people in the Torre quarter, where the fourteenth-century church of Sant'Antonio Abate stands. The village ecomuseum was born from the attics: the inhabitants brought a thousand objects out of their own houses.
