Barzio

Province: Lecco · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,297 · Postal code: 23816

On the arms of Barzio there is a walking steer, and it is a pun: the Manzoni family came from the Valsassina, and the town hall still stands in Palazzo Manzoni, where the library keeps a collection devoted entirely to Alessandro. Beside the steer is the AR monogram of the Arrigoni, for the blessed Guarisca, born here in 1382, who founded the valley hospital at Concenedo.

The village, which in the sixteenth century counted little more than three hundred people living in wooden houses with loggias, has become the tourist capital of the Valsassina: since the sixties a cable car has climbed to the Piani di Bobbio, the nearest snow to Milan. In via Baruffaldi is the museum devoted to the sculptor Medardo Rosso.
