Cusio

Province: Bergamo · Region: Lombardy · Population: 252 · Postal code: 24010

The oldest document of the whole upper Val Brembana speaks of this place: it is of 917 and names an inhabitant of the Abrara area. Here the woods and the pastures belonged to everyone, and to share out the money from timber and from the rent of the meadows two men of the village were elected in turn; Venice, so as not to ruin an economy already fragile, imposed no taxes.

At the Salmurano pass, above the village, the Serenissima had set a small customs post to watch the traffic with the Valtellina: the building is still there, but falling apart. In the coat of arms, granted in 2010, there is a hornbeam: it is the tree that grows here, of hard wood, and the people are called the carpègn dé Cus, the hornbeams of Cusio, because they pass for stubborn folk.
