Before the Romans the land was held by Golasecca Celts, known here from their graves; then came the Romans who, having beaten the Insubrian Gauls, split it into centuriated squares, drained it for grain and ran roads across it. On one of those roads, by the oratory of Saints Cosmas and Damian, a milestone was found that ranks among the most important Roman inscriptions of the Bergamo area. The first written records, from the ninth century, already mention a castle held by the Suardi, a powerful Ghibelline family.

Little of that castle is left: in 1358 Bernabò Visconti's soldiers put the village to fire and sword, brought down its tower and burned three hundred people alive, men, women and children. Quiet came with Venice, in 1428. Just under two centuries later the plague of 1630 killed five hundred of the thirteen hundred inhabitants, and the survivors built the oratory of the Dead of Ravarolo out in the fields.
