Golasecca

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,653 · Postal code: 21010

There is a prehistoric civilisation that bears this village's name. The Golasecca culture developed along the Ticino from the Bronze Age until the fifth century before Christ, with proto-urban centres at Castelletto sopra Ticino and Como as well, and we know it above all through its refined funerary art. The municipality today leads, with the Province of Varese and the Superintendency, a project to develop the archaeological area of the Monsorino and open a multimedia centre devoted to that civilisation.

On the promontory of San Michele there was instead a castle, in visual contact with Angera, Arona and Castelletto, which watched over the ford on the Ticino and the road to Lake Maggiore; around the twelfth century it was pulled down to make room for the church, which inherited its position. San Michele was the parish church until 1570, when Charles Borromeo demoted it to a subsidiary; beside it remains the ossuary they call the house of the dead, with a granite window for praying for the departed. The new church, Santa Maria Assunta, was built in less than three years and finished in 1849. Two thousand six hundred and fifty-three inhabitants.
