Zogno lies in the lower Brembana valley, on a slope between Monte Zucco and a bend of the Brembo, with most of the other settlements across the river. Late twelfth-century documents already record it as a rural commune, and a parchment of the Astino monastery dated 1220 names Giovanni Geze as consul of Zogno. The fifteenth-century church of San Lorenzo stands on the ruins of the medieval Guelph castle, pulled down by the Visconti.

The arms show the saint with his iron gridiron and, on a red chief, a gold lily borrowed from the Sonzogni, a family from the place. In 1928 six neighbouring communes were merged in, among them Poscante, where Vincenzo Pacchiana was born in 1773: the brigand known as Pacì Paciana, who robbed the rich for the poor and whom his contemporaries called king of the road and king of the mountain.
