Until the fifteenth century the name took a u — Budiciola, Buthezolis, Butizolis — then shifted to i and at last to the e of today. Scholars disagree on its origin: Paolo Guerrini first thought of imbutisolis, since from above the monks of Serle saw the land as a row of funnels, then corrected himself to abetisolis, after the firs around the Pontenove parish church, plebs de abetisolis; others propose the Celto-Ligurian bedos, «channel, ditch».

Pontenove would owe its name to pons ad nonam, the bridge nine miles from the city, on a reading not everyone accepts. The castle, raised on the hills to guard the Valtenesi road, is still lived in; in 1509, while the League of Cambrai demanded its dismantling, the townspeople held out against Gaston de Foix's troops, and eight years later Venice renewed their privileges. The arms show three silver lilies on red beneath an overturned antique crown, and locally that reversal is read as an insult to the France driven off.
