Serle

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,092 · Postal code: 25080

Serle stands on a plateau full of holes. The Cariadeghe is a karst territory riddled with dolines, swallow holes and caves, which here are called büs, and according to one of the explanations of the name Serle too comes from that, from a word that meant precisely a doline. Below the surface the water goes its own way, while above grow beeches, chestnuts and hornbeams of monumental size; today the plateau is a protected area and a destination for cavers.

On Monte San Bartolomeo, which has a curious truncated-cone shape, lie the remains of the monastic complex linked to the monastery of San Pietro in Monte Orsino, endowed in the eleventh century by the bishop of Brescia, Olderico; in the church, at nine hundred and thirty-three metres, there is a frescoed polyptych in the apse attributed to Paolo da Caylina the Younger, and the excavations have brought back to light the monumental staircase that led up to the monastery. The best-known figure of the village is don Pietro Boifava, born in 1794 and dead in 1879, a priest and a protagonist of the Ten Days of Brescia. Three thousand and ninety-two inhabitants.
