Mazzano appears as a vicus in a document of 961; the name comes from the Latin Magianum, and of a castle raised in the eleventh century and pulled down late in the Middle Ages only the place name Cortine, meaning walls, survives. Then the village shifted on its own: once the land south-east of the Naviglio di Brescia was drained, farms and a mill appeared, and around the mill grew a settlement called Molinetto instead of the vague Campagna di Mazzano.
On 5 May 1779 the town hall moved there, not without clashes with the original people of Mazzano. Ciliverghe, annexed in 1928, had been a comune of its own: its emblem, a three-peaked mount with two letters C and a scroll reading Coeli aperti, fills a quarter of the arms, beside Molinetto's mill wheel, the lion and the oak of the local woods.
