Feast of Saint Zeno
📅 Every year, on 12 April
On 12 April Brione, a municipality of 685 inhabitants in the province of Brescia, celebrates its patron Saint Zeno, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Brione is a village that keeps changing valley. The first records are of the fourteenth century, when the territory lay among the possessions of the abbey of Leno, and ever since it has swung between the Franciacorta and the Val Trompia. Under the Republic of Venice it belonged to the quadra of Gussago, and in the nineteenth century it was actually merged into Gussago because it had too few inhabitants; later it ended up in the canton of the Mella. Having regained its autonomy, under fascism and during the Second World War it was merged again, this time with Ome. After the war it became autonomous once more, and today it is counted among the municipalities of the Val Trompia. Its arms carry peaks, recalling the old name Monte Brioni, and three stars for the main village and its hamlets.
The territory runs from three hundred and twenty metres to one thousand and thirty-five, a range of seven hundred and fifteen, and from the centre of the village the eye reaches from the Franciacorta as far as the Apennines. In the hamlet of Vesalla, at eight hundred and thirteen metres, where some fifteen people live today, stands Palazzo Bailo: it was the sixteenth-century house of a family from Sarezzo known for making weapons for the Republic of Venice, and it is now a ruin, stripped by thieves and gutted by a fire after the death of the last person who lived in it.
