Sarezzo

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 13,469 · Postal code: 25068

Sarezzo lies in the lower Val Trompia, partly in the side valley of the Gobbia, and the Mella runs right through it. Old populations gathered here to trade goods and cattle, and the ancient name Saretium recalls fences and pens for animals; others trace it to flint, citing the word Sérès, which in fact meant granite, of which there is no trace here. The village appears as Serezio in the Valtrompia quadra of 1385 and as Serecium in the Brescia town statute of 1429.

In 1557 the rector Ludovico Dolzi warned archpriest Vincenzo Covi that hermits were coming to the square and through the valley to give much-liked speeches; he asked one of them to leave, and the listeners muttered that he should be let preach. Late in the seventeenth century Tiburzio Bailo turned to making artillery: the Bailo were among the chief cannon suppliers of the Venetian Republic, and Tiburzio's standing let him skip an appearance before the Council of Ten in Venice. The arms carry a silver castle topped by an owl and the motto Castellanie communis Saretii vallis Trompie.

Saint Faustinus, patron of the land of the Brescian knight-saints

📅 Every year, on 15 February; in 1920, clashes against the Catholic section's feast caused 5 deaths and 9 injuries

Sarezzo celebrates Saint Faustinus on 15 February, in the church dedicated to him and his brother Saint Jovita. The two young Brescian nobles, knights converted to Christianity by Bishop Apollonius, were martyred in the 2nd century for refusing to sacrifice to the gods, and are now patrons of Brescia and several local parishes.
