Polaveno

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,661 · Postal code: 25060

Between 1904 and 1910, 576 people left Polaveno, nearly all of them to work in Switzerland, and came back with sums of money that showed in the village. The curate don Stefano Arici was so struck by it that he wrote that if all emigrant villages had been like this one, in ten years Switzerland would have been left without a penny. Even earlier, for that matter, people here had learned to rely on themselves: on the twenty-third of February 1676, after a series of deaths from an illness nobody could identify, the whole community decided to solemnise the memory of Saint Peter Martyr with a feast if the epidemic stopped.

The village's name has at least four explanations: advenae Polae, those who came from Pola, that is a group of Istrians said to have settled here; polis advenae, those who came from the city; the joining of pullus and labes, landslip ground; or else a little spring. On the pass that links the Val Trompia to the lake of Iseo stands the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Giogo, which the Benedictines of Rodengo had made into a hospice for travellers. Two thousand six hundred and sixty-one inhabitants in the province of Brescia.
