Capovalle

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 388 · Postal code: 25070

Until 1907 the village was called Hano; then a royal decree changed the name, because the old one had been judged «transparent and vulgar». Its three quarters are called Zumiè, Vico and Viè, and two of those names say the same thing: village, and crossing of roads. And indeed this was a place people passed through, between the Valle Sabbia, the Garda and the Trentino.

In a document of 1200 the people of Val Vestino carry one beam as far as the boundary bridge, and the people of Hano take it up and carry it on, to Vobarno, to repair the castle. Others passed through too: in November 1526 twenty thousand landsknechts on their way to Rome. And in June 1848 Luciano Manara wrote from here: «my palace is a sheep stall».
